A couple of weeks ago some very interesting Windows news flew by under the radars that I think deserves much more credit than it received, considering how much we rely on the web and the impact this has on making it safer.

Change Login Screen in Windows 7

September 8th, 2009 No comments

indows 7 allows you to easily change the background of this new login screen, so you can use any of your favorite wallpaper as login screen background without using any 3rd party software.

How to do that? Just follow these simple steps:

1. Type regedit in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background

3. Now in right-side pane, change value of OEMBackground to 1

4. Now go to following folder:

%windir%\System32\oobe

Here %windir% represents “Windows” folder present in the system drive where Windows 7 is installed.

5. Create a new folder “info” inside oobe folder. Then again create a new folder “backgrounds” inside info folder. So the final path would be:

%windir%\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds

6. Now copy any desired wallpaper to this new “backgrounds” folder but following conditions must be followed:

  • The image name must be backgroundDefault.jpg.
  • The image size must be less than 256 KB.
  • The image format must be JPG.

7. That’s it. Once you copy the wallpaper to “backgrounds” folder, your Windows 7 login screen will start using this new wallpaper as background. You can check the new login screen background by logging off or locking Windows.

KeePass Password Safe

What is KeePass?

Today you need to remember many passwords. You need a password for the Windows network logon, your e-mail account, your homepage’s FTP password, online passwords (like website member account), etc. etc. etc. The list is endless. Also, you should use different passwords for each account. Because if you use only one password everywhere and someone gets this password you have a problem… A serious problem. The thief would have access to your e-mail account, homepage, etc. Unimaginable.

KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish). For more information, see the features page.

Is it really free?
Yes, KeePass is really free, and more than that: it is open source (OSI certified). You can have a look at its full source and check whether the encryption algorithms are implemented correctly.

Stable Release KeePass 1.16 (Installer EXE for Windows)
This package contains everything you need to use KeePass. Simply download the EXE file above, run it and follow the steps of the installation program. You need local installation rights (use the Portable version below, if you don’t have these rights).

Stable Release Portable KeePass 1.16 (ZIP Package)
Download this ZIP package and unpack it to your favorite location (USB stick, …). KeePass runs without any additional installation and won’t store any settings outside the application directory.

Supported operating systems:
Windows 98 / 98SE / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / Wine, each 32-bit and 64-bit.

DESKTOP EARTH 2.1

September 1st, 2009 1 comment
Google Buzz

Desktop Earth is a wallpaper generator for Windows. It runs whenever you’re logged on and updates your wallpaper with an accurate representation of the Earth as it would be seen from space at that precise moment.

Images are created from high-resolution textures (2560×1280) so it’s perfect for that QSXGA display – but they work on anything, even on SVGA.

There is an image for every month to accurately depict snow and foliage changes, and the night view is simply stunning.

The imagery is based on NASA’s Blue Marble Next and Earth’s City Lights.
