The following guide will help you jailbreak and unlock iphone 2G (aka EDGE) on 3.1.2 firmware with 05.11.07 baseband. We will use blackra1n RC3 to jailbreak iPhone 2G on 3.1.2 firmware and then later unlock it for any carrier using BootNeuter. blacksn0w unlock is for iPhone 3G and 3GS only and so we will have to use BootNeuter which can unlock iPhone 2G on 3.1.2 firmware with 05.11.07 baseband. iPhone 3G and 3GS:

1. Update your iPhone to new 3.1.2 firmware directly using iTunes or by using the direct download links and using shift+restore on iTunes
2. Download and install Blackra1n RC3 from http://www.blackra1n.com
3. Run the software to Ra1n your iPhone (Click the “make it ra1n” icon).Takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute.



4. After iPhone reboots, open blackra1n.app and you should now see “sn0w”.



5. Click “sn0w” to install Blacksn0w. This will Unlock your iPhone 3G, 3GS running 3.1.2 firmware on 05.11.07 baseband.

For iPhone 3G and 3GS who previously installed blackra1n:

If you are a loyal blackra1n user who kept the blackra1n.app on your iPhone, run it. You will see Icy replaced by an option “ra1n”. Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see “sn0w”. Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

To jailbreak and/or unlock your iPhone 3GS on the 3.0 firmware and so you can put in your Rogers/Fido SIM card (or any other carrier SIM), follow the steps below:

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 3GS

1.) Download redsn0w 0.8 (a more powerful QuickPwn) for Mac here or Windows here and extract the install file “redsn0w” to a folder.

2.) Download the 3.0 firmware for the iPhone 3GS here.

3.) Put the downloads from Steps 1 and 2 into a single folder together.

4.) Open iTunes and plug your iPhone 3GS in via the USB. Backup your iPhone 3GS if iTunes allows you to. (If you are already running 3.0, go to Step 6).

5.) When iTunes recognizes the iPhone 3GS, click “Check for Updates” in iTunes. This will update your iPhone 3GS with the 3.0 firmware. Read more…

The best part about iphone 3.0 firmware is the ability to email more than one iPhone photo. Gone are the days where we had to select one photo painstakingly at a time! Anyways, here’s a relatively “old” tip that I’ve been meaning to share with those who don’t know about it yet–how to email full size iPhone 2G/3G/3GS photos.

How to Email Full Size iPhone 2G/3G/3GS Photos

Essentially, you will be sharing your photos using copy and paste instead of the default “Share” option in Photos. Here are some instructions for those people who need hand holding:

1. Launch Photos. Click on Camera Roll.
2. Click on the “arrow” in the bottom left corner. Highlight images you want to the full size image of. Click Copy.
3. Exit Photos and launch Mail. Compose a new email. Click Paste. Email.

Voila! Your images will now be in full 2048×1536 resolution (on the iphone 3GS) instead of the old 800×600 resolution. A quick test shows the file sizes below:

Picture emailed via Copy and Paste: 1.2MB

Good news for the peoples who accidentally upgraded their iPhone 3G to OS 3.1 beta. iPhone OS 3.1 Beta updates your current baseband to 5.08.01which is unlockable at the moment because Ultrasn0w is not supported by the latest baseband. Bigboss released Fyzzyband 3.1b1-1. Fuzzyband Downgrader is a safer iPhone 3G  Baseband Downgrader as this one detects your baseband and bootloader version and does the wright thing first. More general 3GFuzzyband Downgrader detects your bootloader and baseband and downgrade it with a simple click. Fuzzyband Downgrader available in ICY and Cydia just refresh your sources and search n install the application.

latest version of Fuzzyband Downgrader has two features Upgrades / Downgrades baseband to 4.26.08 for unlocking with the ultrasn0w tool released by the iPhone Dev-Team. If you are on a lower baseband than 4.26.08 Upgrading will put the 4.26.08 baseband from 3.0 on the modem so that ultrasn0w may be installed from Cydia. Downgrading works from any version greater than 4.26.08 (currently 5.08.01 is the newest version available, found in 3.1 beta 1). It will put your baseband back at version 4.26.08 which is the current unlockable version by Ultrasn0w.

Downgrading only works on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. This is a very limited number of phones that were released in the first few weeks of the 3G production cycle. If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number for you. In my case i have bootloader 5.09 but my baseband is 4.26.08 and i m very concerned about baseband updates. So after the OS 3.1 final release I’ll wait for the Dev team release.
